Scutum
The Shield
Origin of the Constellation
Scutum is a modern constellation and the only constellation to be associated with a historical figure of the modern era. The complete title of this constellation is Scutum Sobiescianum, that is, Sobieski's Shield. The constellation was created by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in 1684. The constellation honors King John Sobieski III, the King of Poland.
The constellation honors King Sobieski's defeat of the Turks at Kalenberg in 1683, as the Turks marched toward the Vienna.
Scutum is quite dim; it contains only two stars as bright as fourth magnitude.
